People weren’t buying that whole “global warming” thing so now we’re supposed to worry about “climate change.” Does anyone else wish those clowns would remove politics from science?

I guess if the ice isn’t actually IN the water when it melts, that would count. The earth is actually colder than it was 10 years ago, though.

I agree that global warming is cyclical, look at the history of the world. There will be people who think Al Gore has “special knowledge”, I don’t. We need to do everything we can to take care of this world we live in but I think eventually the fact that it is global warming is cyclical and has been since the beginning of time, we can try to live our lives responsibly on this earth and not pull a chicken little. Sorry we don’t agree.

Try a little experiment – just to say you did it.
Fill a glass or a small pan half way with water and throw in some ice. Mark the water level. Wait until the ice melts.
Notice any change?
It’s called displacement. Some guy named Archimedes discovered it and oddly enough, it’s called the Archimedes Principle.
Scare tactics like this, and the folks who seem to forget their grade school science are what’s contributing to “global warming”.

I live on the Chesapeake Bay, and I can attest to a very marked change in sea level and ice formation, where ice formation = 30 years ago our creeks and rivers froze over solid enough to walk across them; now they don’t.
As vuboq says, global warming is somewhat of a misnomer. The fact is, stuff is changing, and naturally climate will change with or without Man, BUT! there’s a darn good chance that Man is contributing to the *incredible acceleration* of this climate change.

I’m not sure I want to jump into this particular pond, but I seem to be compelled. For the folks who don’t understand why melting the ice can raise sea levels? Because the ice isn’t all floating in the ocean; much of it is sitting on landmasses. Glaciers in the alps, for instance, are vanishing, and when the water gets to the bottom of the hill, it eventually ends up … in the ocean. Same thing for the glaciers covering places like Greenland and Iceland (though the distance downhill isn’t as far in those cases).
Hmmm…so you’re trying to tell me that more water = more water and that rising sea levels indicate rising sea levels? I don’t know. Sounds pretty controversial.
1957!!!!! Good God! Pardon me, but that just sucks. I was complaining about what we were doing to our environment when I was 6 and everyone just patted me on the head and laughed. Why doesn’t anyone ever listen to kids? They know things. Plus, like, it’s really their world anyway, isn’t it? They should have some say about what they’re being left with. To people who say climate change is bunk, I say go take a look at the smog over NYC, Atlanta, or LA in the summer and tell me about how healthy it is. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that there’s something wrong with brown air! Love jan8mr.lootiato’s comment about the sand. It captures the prevailing mood perfectly: “That cancer stuff about smoking is all just a bunch of scare tactics. My grandmother smoked until she died at 92. There’s nothing wrong having a few cigarettes….”
See, now, based on the “inclement” weather we’ve been having in these parts (Portland, OR) this past week, I can see where the term “global warming” was a hard sell.
