Julee Cruise, Rockin Back Inside My Heart.
Dear children, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and programs were recorded on VCRs, Julee Cruise sang the theme song for a popular and twisted TV show, Twin Peaks, and won a Grammy for it.
She also lent her vocals to this song, featured on an episode of Twin Peaks and written by Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch in 1990. The scene took place in a nightclub and Julee Cruise was singing on a dark little stage and Bossy can’t remember another detail except how thankful she was that she had recorded the episode on her VCR so she could rewind to this spot at will and play and replay it. Because that’s what people did back then, children, without iTunes and YouTube.
Bossy wore the magnet thin on that particular VHS tape.
This song, a verse, a bridge, and a couple of choruses into it, features the best discordant sax solo in the history of discordant sax solos, complete with I-Spy horn part.
This version of the song is approximately three minutes too long, and for that Bossy apologizes. But that’s also the way things were done, dear children.
My boyfriend always says that he first became interested in dating me because, upon a visit to my house, he spotted my Twin Peaks box set. So our first few months of dating were spent watching episode after episode after GLORIOUS episode of Twin Peaks.
We’re planning a trip to Washington State to visit filming locations because we both become 16-year-old-fan-grrls when it comes to Twin Peaks. (It really is quite funny to see a man over 40 let his inner 16 year old fan-grrl out.)
The entire Floating Into The Night album is wonderful. Their use of “Rockin’ Back..” in the show was eerie, beautiful and somewhat terrifying. That scene made me hunt the album down.
The first time I was aware of hearing this song was on my first day of work at a Gap store sometime in 1994. When the horns came in on the “Tibetan 12″ mix” I nearly lost my shit in the middle of learning how to fold shirts or some nonsense. I ended up buying two copies of the record (yes, vinyl) and even started a DJ mix with the a capella. You can listen to that mix here:
