The boy and I are in current negotiations to bypass becoming 7 years old and staying 6 forever. He’s not buying it. Even though he’s usually so compliant!
I’m feeling a little teary eyed! Congratulations to your son and to you! When I graduated, I felt like it was my achievement but now looking back I think my parents should have received an award to for all their help and support. Then again, I just helped my 4 year old (yes, I know he’s little) write down his favorite memory for the preschool scrapbook that’s being put together for his teacher.
Oh, look at that little face. Congrats to him on making it through (with flying colors no less), and congrats to you and the Mr. on raising such a fine upstanding (and handsome!) young man.
Aww, liddle guy. Mine little fella is only 8 months old and, what with the fussy and the diapers and the disrupted sleep…zzzz…um, what? Oh, really I cannot fathom that whole thing 17 years from now. Altho, they do tell me that it goes fast. I guess you’d agree…Congratulations!

I never believed people when they said “it goes fast” until It. Went. Fast. Since my nest emptied out (last year), I dream of babies, of little kids…
On the up side, I had a beer and a nosh with my two sons (now ages 22 and 24) earlier this week, and they didn’t start wrestling until we were headed back to car. Beats the hell out of a food fight in the restaurant.
Do I ever know that feeling. I’m still weeping over my baby turning 21 in April. And the “teak lots of photos” advice is so true. In twenty years you too can embarrass your child with a blog post featuring a compilation of his life in photos.
The only part of childhood I’d really like to simply blink and make disappear is the whole potty training thing. Other than that, totally grateful for every moment. Usually.

I am three-quarters of the way through my blink and I just want to stay here … except the 3/4-blink makes me look funny in photos. And by funny, I mean retarded.
I have a 22 year old, and I have a three year old. It seems like yesterday that my oldest was my youngest’s age. The oldest just moved back in with us while he finishes college, and it’s pretty funny to check him when he complains that his little brother is kind of bratty. Cause he’s got nothing on the oldest at that age!

You are so right. The first year was very slow, but the last 5 1/2 have flown by. When he sleeps he still looks like the baby he was, but sometimes, in the right light, I can see flashes of the young man he’ll be.
I imagine that when you look at your son, you can still see all the ages that he was, even if he doesn’t want to be reminded of it just now.

I’m going to break protocol here and not only comment twice, but shout out to Mr. Farty for a great line and laugh out loud with the hot and cold thing.
Yep! I just got done sitting down with my 20 year old and helping him with his resume.
When my son was in kindergarten, he rode the bus after school to his after-school care, which was the pre-school he went to since he was 3.
I remember first I rode the bus with him and walked him the 1/2 block to the school.
Then I put him on the bus, followed the bus in my car, and walked him to school.
Then I met him at the bus-stop at the day-car, walked him to school.
Then I parked at the bus-stop and waved at him as he walked to school.
Then I parked across the street and down the block and watched him get off the bus and walked to school without him knowing I was there.
it was so sweet to see him run so confidently down the sidewalk to the preschool and buzz the gate. I did this maybe 3 times, and then I felt comfortable with the arrangement.
Because we were on a city bus line, sometimes I took the bus to work and when I picked him up at the end of the day, we’d walk from the pre-school to the city bus stop, and ride it home together. I think things like this made him a very confident, self-reliant person.
As a junior high student in LA, he learned how to travel by bus in Santa Monica and the westside – and probably further into downtown and East LA than I really want to know.
Today he lives in Brooklyn and takes the subway to his college classes in Manhattan. He’s back in LA for the summer.
{sigh}
Can Meg call Bossy to commiserate when she blinks and in 6 short years her 12 year old is graduating from high school?

There’s a great little short story you should read called “The Swing” by Mary Ladd Gavell in her collection of stories, “I Cannot Tell a Lie, Exactly.” It speaks to the mother looking back on her adult son as a 6 y.o. boy.
It’s hard watching our kids grow up because we know they will never be as they were, and yet they have the potential to become something equally as awesome, and we hope that that will come to pass. We don’t experience this with any other loved ones–we don’t sit around and wonder what our friends or parents will be like in 10 years or yearn for them to stay just as they are in any given moment; we just let them evolve and our relationship grows around that.
Congratulations, Bossy’s son, and congratulations Bossy and Bossy’s Husband for shepherding him thus far!
Life never seems to give you a moment to hold it. I continue to ask myself where does it go, and why does every day seem to go by faster. It never gets easier, in fact, it gets harder to control the time. And dam if I’m not getting older and my kids smarter….
You know, I have these snippets of flashbacks all of the time! I often say to myself that the days go by so slowly, but the years do fly by so quickly! I could just cry thinking about it! I still have a vision of my frightened first grader son holding his big sister’s (5th grade big sis) hand as they approached the school bus-he was terrified and she was so protective. I am sobbing now……….

Uhhhh, I was just going to post about this today but I kept getting choked up. My baby just graduated from her first year of preschool. I didn’t even get slightly emotional on her first day but her last day? Tears! They showed a photo montage of her class and school and played an entirely gay Michael Buble song over it and I cried! And even worse, downloaded the song!! What will become of me when she graduates high school?

of course there are lots of things to look forward to. but the end of days of innocence are so hard. I just had to get that out of my system, so thank you. I pray we see our children grow up strong and healthy. i read a blog of a woman who lost two of her young daughters in a car accident and so this precious time has to be really valued.
why do they grow up so fast. who told them to? i can hardly believe my son went from handing me papers to read for him to reading our his own kindergarten handouts.

I am SO grateful I’ve been able to really BE with my kids, and treasure every moment – mostly. It does fly by so quickly.

No you may not swim across the pool you are too tiny for that. Get back here you tall gawky thirteen year old and be my little snuggle bug again! Oh! my boys are growing up way too fast too.
My boy turns 5 next month. I plan to permanently prop my eyelids open with toothpicks in order to prevent blinking.
Believe me.. I know. My son just graduated last Sunday… the time goes so fast.

ahhhh – I so know what your are going through. Number 2 will be done school in three weeks and off to university in September. Our nest will be empty.

my oldest is 6 and he is graduating from kindergarten in a couple weeks… I’m not ready for that never mind highschool grad!

Yep! I just got done sitting down with my 20 year old and helping him with his resume.
When my son was in kindergarten, he rode the bus after school to his after-school care, which was the pre-school he went to since he was 3.
I remember first I rode the bus with him and walked him the 1/2 block to the school.
Then I put him on the bus, followed the bus in my car, and walked him to school.
Then I met him at the bus-stop at the day-car, walked him to school.
Then I parked at the bus-stop and waved at him as he walked to school.
Then I parked across the street and down the block and watched him get off the bus and walked to school without him knowing I was there.
it was so sweet to see him run so confidently down the sidewalk to the preschool and buzz the gate. I did this maybe 3 times, and then I felt comfortable with the arrangement.
Because we were on a city bus line, sometimes I took the bus to work and when I picked him up at the end of the day, we’d walk from the pre-school to the city bus stop, and ride it home together. I think things like this made him a very confident, self-reliant person.
As a junior high student in LA, he learned how to travel by bus in Santa Monica and the westside – and probably further into downtown and East LA than I really want to know.
Today he lives in Brooklyn and takes the subway to his college classes in Manhattan. He’s back in LA for the summer.
As a teacher, now I see why parents always cry as they drop their kids off for the first day of Kindergarten.
I blinked twice, and now my daughter is 27. If I blink again I’ll probably be a great-grandfather.

I cried the ugly cry when I dropped off my eldest daughter at her first day of kindergarten. Cried like a big ol baby. I can only imagine the tears in 12 years. Congrat’s to the whole Bossy clan. Enjoy the summer. And, just think of those glorious visits to NYC-Columbia in the fall.
It may be the PMS talking, but I just had to fight back the tears from reading this post. My last boy goes to kindy in the fall.
I swear, after age 22 life was a blur in my peripheral vision. Cliche’ be damned…it goes by way too fast.
It is all so true…my son’s son is going to be 7 in August…I can’t believe it went by so quickly…both of them.
There’s a great little short story you should read called “The Swing” by Mary Ladd Gavell in her collection of stories, “I Cannot Tell a Lie, Exactly.” It speaks to the mother looking back on her adult son as a 6 y.o. boy.
It’s hard watching our kids grow up because we know they will never be as they were, and yet they have the potential to become something equally as awesome, and we hope that that will come to pass. We don’t experience this with any other loved ones–we don’t sit around and wonder what our friends or parents will be like in 10 years or yearn for them to stay just as they are in any given moment; we just let them evolve and our relationship grows around that.

College goes by even faster. My oldest graduated last year and I swear I was at her high school graduation just a half hour ago.
Oops, to be clear I meant my oldest graduated from college last year.
Right now I wish I could blink.

I remember the moment when I realized my son was growing up, was when I first smelled his BO.

Life never seems to give you a moment to hold it. I continue to ask myself where does it go, and why does every day seem to go by faster. It never gets easier, in fact, it gets harder to control the time. And dam if I’m not getting older and my kids smarter….

You know, I have these snippets of flashbacks all of the time! I often say to myself that the days go by so slowly, but the years do fly by so quickly! I could just cry thinking about it! I still have a vision of my frightened first grader son holding his big sister’s (5th grade big sis) hand as they approached the school bus-he was terrified and she was so protective. I am sobbing now……….
My niece just graduated yesterday. I kept telling her not to take that brick off her head so she wouldn’t grow up, but she just wouldn’t listen. I can still remember how it felt to hold her the first time, when she was just a few hours old. I cried then too…
I’m going to need an unlimited supply of valium if it all goes by this quickly, and the day my little guy heads for college, well, just take me out to a bar and shoot me.

This post makes me HORRIBLY EMOTIONAL!! I busted out crying when I saw Bossy’s sweet son walking from the bus! Why you ask? My own will start kindergarten in two months and I am not ready. I am an emotional mess and I haven’t even bought the first item on the school supply list. I want to freeze time so he stays my little man forever. *sniffle*

Uhhhh, I was just going to post about this today but I kept getting choked up. My baby just graduated from her first year of preschool. I didn’t even get slightly emotional on her first day but her last day? Tears! They showed a photo montage of her class and school and played an entirely gay Michael Buble song over it and I cried! And even worse, downloaded the song!! What will become of me when she graduates high school?
i have to say i had to revisit your site and i read this post again. and that picture just gets me. for one thing, when they get off that little yellow bus, you know they have no troubles, no worries, all they care about is candy and playtime and nothing beyond that.
just really breaks my heart to see my son and daughter go from small to larger. time is flowing by fast.
whatever happened to days of onesies and diapers and they were fascinated by a little round ball.
how heartbreaking it is to see them grow up so fast. i can easily see that for every mom who has ever held a baby, these precious moments are priceless and can never be replaced and oh, how we wish we could have them back.
of course there are lots of things to look forward to. but the end of days of innocence are so hard. I just had to get that out of my system, so thank you. I pray we see our children grow up strong and healthy. i read a blog of a woman who lost two of her young daughters in a car accident and so this precious time has to be really valued.
why do they grow up so fast. who told them to? i can hardly believe my son went from handing me papers to read for him to reading our his own kindergarten handouts.
could they not lay in my arms for a little while longer.
