Dear Thanksgiving. By Debbie Downer.
The holiday officially began on Wednesday afternoon when Bossy’s son, who attends Columbia University, was collected from the bus station and deposited in front of Bossy’s house, where he enjoyed a tearful reunion with his kid sister:
Bossy’s two children quickly got to work on their separate Thanksgiving projects. Bossy’s daughter disappeared into the spotless kitchen to prepare the homemade piecrusts necessary for two traditional pumpkin pies:
Meanwhile Bossy’s son patiently waited his turn to use the kitchen, so he could prep the ingredients for his acclaimed raison bread stuffing with sweet fennel sausage and sage:
With the majority of cooking out of the way, Bossy’s daughter invited her cousins over to prepare the name cards for the special Thanksgiving table:
And then all of the children retreated to the family room, where they enjoyed a captivating Oprah show about The Thriftiest Holiday Ever:
The next morning, the household was up bright and early in order to continue the feast preparations.
Bossy’s daughter made the pie filling and poured it into her perfectly fitting shell:
And then Bossy’s son reheated his stuffing prep ingredients and mixed everything together with his freshly chopped breadcrumbs and some orange marmalade and lemon rind:
In a few hours the house was teeming with hungry and jovial friends and family. First the children settled around their special table:
And then the sixteen adults situated themselves around the large extended table where they ate turkey and stuffing and cranberry relish and sweet potatoes and a dirty little secret while discussing politics and religion and the stunning things they can do with their double-jointed limbs:

At least Bossy’s son shaved that little thing on his chin in time for dinner. And that looks like a very nice bottle of wine directly in front of your spot at the table. So there’s two things to be thankful for, right?

You are so right about that Oprah episode. I was all psyched to see her embarrassingly extravagant ‘Favorite Things’ show and instead I saw the most disappointing Oprah show in a long time! What a bummer.

We had Thanksgiving with the in-laws. Endured a gross dinnertime story from FIL about a foot surgery and his snarky comments about college searches for BIL’s high school son. Also, FIL kept interrupting people as they discussed weird dreams they’ve had and then he told a story about the time his mother lost her mind. Unfortunately, he got all of the details of the story wrong due to forgetting, which is a concern since his mom didn’t so much lose her mind as suffer from Alzheimers. And she didn’t “come down” with it all in one day like his story would insinuate. Trust me when I say that I missed your dad at dinner, Bossy, and I don’t even know him.
Aw. Sorry to hear about Bossy’s Dad. I hope he’s better soon!
By the way, have you seen this actress? She was on ER last week and I thought FOR SURE it was Bossy’s daughter.

Thanksgiving with someone out of commission is never fun. Similar to having ‘rhea and the vomits on a plane on the way to Thanksgiving dinner but worse. And I speak from experience on both counts.

I’m so sorry about your dad. That IS a major downer.
I haven’t felt the same about Thanksgiving since my mid-20’s. Since then, I lost my favorite aunt, uncle, sister, mom & dad. Thanksgiving just isn’t the same anymore. I just kind of get through it…

I’m so un-down with it I don’t even know who Debbie Downer is, but I sure as heck know who the Wah-Wuh lady is– because that is me.
And know this about that: I feel that a free pass to the Land of Bitchy should be given to anyone who is (a) juggling the responsibility of a stressful family hoilday and (b) juggling the stressful holiday without a key member of the family.
Thoughts of healing to Bossy’s family on the receiving end of the Wah-Wuhs, and prayers of healing to Bossy’s Dad.
