Ten-Word Tuesday: The Birthday Edition

You are looking at the blizzard that hit the day Bossy was born, exactly !!@@&&#*^&$^# years ago today.

Bossy knows there was a blizzard on the day she was born, because every year Bossy’s father phones Bossy in order to recount her birth story.

There was a blizzard. And so when Bossy’s mom went into labor, Bossy’s dad packed the family car with Bossy’s mom and Bossy’s brother, because in a car is exactly where you want to be when someone is in labor with a nine-pound baby during a blizzard.

But before Bossy’s mom could deliver her new baby, Bossy’s mom and dad had to drop off their old baby — who was actually Bossy’s sweet seven year old brother — at Bossy’s grandparent’s house.

As the family car cut its way through the blizzard along East River Drive, Bossy’s father looked over and saw that the Schuykill River was frozen over from side to side, a somewhat rare occurrence in Bossy’s hometown of Philadelphia.

With Bossy’s brother situated at Bossy’s grandparent’s house, Bossy’s dad and Bossy’s mom continued to the hospital where baby Bossy was born. The end.

Except it’s not the end, because typically there isn’t just the one birth day, but many many sister mercy many birthdays that follow.

Therein lies the problem. You see, Bossy has never liked her birthday. When Bossy was young she hated the attention, especially the singing of Happy Birthday which always made Bossy cry.

Bossy’s favorite birthday took place the February after Bossy’s son was born. That year Bossy’s birthday fell on a freak warm day, and so Bossy decided to paint her porch floor and steps — and Bossy had such a great birthday time doing this, the breeze blowing the paint fumes across her brain stem:

In fact, Bossy can sum up her relationship with her birthday this way: Not that it’s a bad day, just that it’s cumulative.

    I can’t put in in ten words but form my 39th birthday, I flew my mother to London where I was on a work trip. We had dinner at a lovely old restaurant and then went to see the Lion King in the theatre. It was perfect!
