Great Danes.
What characters. Everything you ever saw or heard depicted in a Scooby Doo animation is correct; this breed is more human than animal, more horse than dog. Despite their size they are not aggressive in the least, although they may talk your ear off.
But make no mistake, Great Danes are not for the novice dog owner. They require very early and thorough socialization to counteract some of their tendencies to become easily spooked, and they need lots of training because. Would you want to argue with one of these things?

December 23, 2008 at 8:34 amWatching Stella’s adventures has really made me want a Great Dane of my own. Luckily I wouldn’t be a novice dog owner and no I wouldn’t want to argue with one of them…lol

December 23, 2008 at 9:49 amI want a Stella so badly. The husband? He’s more of a Yorkie-sized person. We have a dog that’s in between, only 80 lbs.

I’m dog-sitting TWO Danes over New Year. One is 7 years, the other is 7 months. Any suggestions? (Aside from spoiling the crud out of them, that is.)

No, if you want a beginner dog – get a Greyhound 😀 . Looking at them crosseyed is enough to get them to stop *insert offense here* most times! (I can say that because I’m owned by two of the greatest greyhounds in the world – or at least my world).
Cactus Petunia says
December 23, 2008 at 7:22 pmEarly and thorough socialization. Huh. Maybe THAT’S why my daughter is so easily spooked…Where was Bossy’s advice when I was contemplating whether I should have children or dogs?

December 23, 2008 at 11:41 pmMake your voice go deep. Now say woo woo woo woo woo. Now you speak Greyhound. One of the most vocal breeds I have ever owned. I bet Stella could translate, but I think it means “give me another piece of duck breast jerky”.

December 25, 2008 at 7:47 amAh yes… the late Great Cosmo was a fabulous watchdog… anyone looking to a bit of mischief had the bejeezus scared out of them by JUST. ONE. BARK. Never looked like hurting anyone, but they were never game to test the theory!!
