Bossy’s Favorite Things
Bossy’s hair clips, also known as Alligator Clamps, Hair Claws, or Jaws.
Bossy can’t even tell you how hard she laughed when these plastic clips came on the scene over a decade ago. Not that they haven’t always been around in a utilitarian way, but Bossy is referring to the day they became acceptable to wear outside of the shopping center hair salon.
At first Bossy was all, “Oh my gah look what that girl has stuck to the back of her head and she doesn’t even know it!”
At the time, and the three decades proceeding it, Bossy was using some form of rubber band or scrunchie or discarded t-shirt sleeve to harness her hair on top of her head in some sort of fake bun/ponytail. But Bossy must admit that most of these methods, consistently worn over time, produced broken and split bits of hair.
Bossy’s clips do no such thing, which is saying a lot considering the weight and volume of Bossy’s hay. Are weight and volume the same thing?
The thing I miss most about having long hair are the hair accesories.

Bossy has beautiful hair!
I LOVE Bossy’s hair. In fact, come summertime when the humidity is high and the days are hot, I’m getting a perm. Yes, a PERM, so that I can have Bossy hair. In fact, I’m taking in a pic of Bossy to my stylist and saying, “Give me that hair.”
I too went to my stylist and said give me Bossy hair. Unfortunately my hair is bossy in its own way which is to say it likes to stay straight and curlless and hang off my scalp like a limp cat (Baby David reference = 2 points) unless we are in the wonderful static electricty months (now) when it takes to trying to escape my scalp by flying straight up in the air at the most inopportune times. Yeah, so good luck with that! I am now concentrating my efforts on getting skin like Bossy’s and so far not so good. Stress and perimenopause (aka hell on earth)…nuff said. Rant over resume enjoying Bossy and co. I’ll be over here drinking tons of water and staying within 10 feet of a bathroom at all times.
Yes, they make sense. I have the same and describe it the same way. Except where Bossy has the curls and nice color, Martha in Kansas has the straight and grey. And isn’t grey even boring to type? Love how you clamp your hair, some escapes, and you look all casual and elegant. (And do those two go together?) My method has been to slick it back into a ponytail. I found a picture the other day in which my forehead seems to extend all the way back to the ponytail. Not the elegant look I was going for!
I have fine hair and if I use a hair tie (rubberband in sheep’s clothing?), the hair around the edges begins to break. I find that, other than a braid, the hair clip is the only thing that works for me.
not the same. weight is a force exerted, where F=M*A and volume is the amount of space taken up where V=l*w*h – for a simple box.
but the cat looks fake…
Back in the day when I had long hair, I ALWAYS had a hair clip on my person. It may not have been IN MY HAIR, though. It may have been clipped to a belt loop. Or the strap of my shoulder bag. Or stuffed in said shoulder bag.
In the summer, one was ALWAYS clamped to the turn signal on my car’s steering column. Unless it was in my hair. Heh.
Also? I second MariaV…I miss the hair accessories more than I miss the hair.
I have such fine, thin hair that even at its longest I would need a kid’s clip. Sigh. That’s why my hair is kept short and kicky.
Bossy’s clip would slide straight out of Reeb’s long but thin hair.
“thin”? maybe fine is the better descriptor. I have to buy the leetle clips too.

Whenever I have my hair cut short, I stash all the hair clips in a special place. I’m growing it out again and looking forward to a reunion with the hair clips.
I would have guessed Bossy’s lovely hair would be light rather than heavy. I got waves where she got curls but as I didn’t have them all the time, I’m thankful I got them after having cut my hair once.
Talking about clips, I only have one of those jaw types that’s strong enough to hold the whole heavy lot in place.
But I was delighted to find another clip that’s actually able to cope with the amount and weight of hair on my head.
The bad thing about it is that it seems to be the only little thing you just can’t find and buy on the net. It was a present, it’s simple and elegant – and unfortunately, it’s korean. It was bought on a street market somewhere in Korea and seemingly can’t be bought anywhere else. Boohooo.

They do sell monster ones, but they look a little too much like the 80’s banana clips, do you remember them?

My aunt used to be a hair dresser, rest her soul, and whenever I would go to her house and she would give me a trim she had those plastic (the kind where the plastic actually bubbles and scrapes off in tiny crumbs) clamp things in really bright colors. I too remember when these became actually acceptable in public and I was all: D’uh, these are not hair accessories they are BARBER accessories. But now, I’m not far from my collection at any given time….sigh….
I did the same thing when I first saw people wearing those clips. I could really look down at them girls too because I had smug short hair. Now it’s long. I love my big clip.
Yeah, love them. But I have about 3x as much hair as Bossy. Many’s the time the clips have died, and broken springs and plastic jaws go shooting across the bathroom floor. Fun! (Mine is too thick to copy that lovely up-do of yours.)
OMG! Bossy, how do you get your hair to do that?! I’ve tried and tried and tried the clips and I always look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. Am desperate for a decent updo to keep my hair away from my toddler – I don’t want to cut it all off again but it’s getting in the way.
I like those clips too, but they dig into my head when I’m driving and lean my head against the headrest…know what I mean?
I would sacrifice one — and possibly two — children for hair like yours. No kidding.
As the owner of shoulder length heavy DEAD STRAIGHT hair, I would officially like to kill you. Mine just slides right out of these kind of devices. And ENOUGH with the tendrils already… I live in a tendril-free zone and I am coveting quite badly.

Oh how I wish my hands would figure out how to get my hair to look like Bossy’s when I put a clip in it. I am just hair illiterate and a ponytail is about as far as my abilities go. Jealous of Bossy’s thick, curly hair.
marathonmom is correct if somewhat esoteric. Weight and volume are not the same thing, but together they make up density. Bossy’s hair is very dense.
