Bossy’s Favorite Things

Bossy’s Favorite Thing is not the lighting in most dressing rooms because, sister mercy, isn’t it a miracle we ever buy anything?

Actually this shopping trip was a failure, as most are thank gah — but Bossy thought it was a good opportunity to capture this dress which Bossy wears nonstop from the time the thermometer rises above 60 degrees until it dips back down in the 50s a handful of months later.

In fact, this isn’t a dress at all. As Bossy’s grandmother would say, it’s shmata — which translates from yiddish into rag.

Bossy bought it for about $15 ten years ago, and it’s what Bossy wears to garden in and to hike in and to clean house in and to go out to fancy dinner in, even if she doesn’t go out to fancy dinners anymore. Ditto on housecleaning.

Bossy never looked at what kind of fabric it is, but you can throw this dress in a ball in the bottom of a backpack and it still looks the same, and you can — as a totally random example — wear it as a nightshirt when you forget to pack one and you are spending the night in D.C. with your gays after a sea of whiskey sours and a few hours later you will wake and make the drive home wearing it.

It’s that kind of dress. Any questions?
