Yet Another Little Known Fact

It’s not all gourmet for Chef Bossy’s Son at Columbia University. Sometimes it’s soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

   Because we weren’t allowed any sort of cooking devices in our dorm rooms, we made grilled cheeses with our iron.

   It’s not like sweatpants ever require ironing, so at least the iron was good for something.

   The bread toasts wonderfully, the cheese never melts right.

   Also, we sat the can of soup on the radiators the night before, and they were hot by lunch the next day. My dorm room was approximately 700 degrees all year round.

   I add some pasta to my mater soup, and NO american cheese in my sammich – a mix of muenster, swiss, colby, provolone on 12 grain bread works just fine for me.

   We had grilled cheese last night! But with french fries. Fun fact about me: I cannot make grilled cheese or quesadillas. They burn or are soggy. My husband has to make them. I tried using the George Foreman but it’s not the same.

    When I was about 10, my dad taught me to make tomato soup with milk instead of water. It changed my life!

    Comfort food for a 50 degree fall day. I love to add a pat of butter to the soup to sweeten it a bit. Cinnamon bun for dessert.

    Yum…grilled cheese and tomato soup. Our daughter eats that a lot at college. We have to have ours with American cheese though and we make cream of tomato with milk instead of water…..and definitely a little butter. (My great grandmother always added a little butter to each bowl and now it’s a family tradition! It makes it much richer. It also makes it fattening of course, but it’s worth it.) Now I know what I am having for lunch today!!

    The trick is to butter the bread, both sides, and then press one side, the one you’re grilling, into fresh grated parmesan. Sigh. Sadly, I don’t eat this because I want to continue to fit into my jeans.
