Call Bossy crazy, but she thinks it’s a perfect night for a Presidential debate. Who needs Date Night when there’s popcorn and Bossy’s husband Jim Lehrer and nine channels eager to broadcast? 9 p.m. EST.

I used to score great men’s suits to re-make at Goodwill.
That is one fine looking Goodwill store!
Very new looking, clean and well maintained… plus deals! AND lower prices~ WOW! Talk about a score!
P.S. Bossy’s DH has a good eye for the pics too.
Why, just last weekend my daughter scored on the dress for her Halloween costume at the Salvation Army: normally $6, but on sale at 50% off! I wanted to buy ten of them and give them away to orphans in need of Halloween costumes.
This is going to sound harsh…..
I would care if Goodwill Industries wasn’t a FOR PROFIT business. They trade on the fact that their name SOUNDS charitable. This way people donate items they don’t have to pay for to stock their inventory. YADA, YADA, YADA….
If you like to donate to good causes, make sure that they have non-profit status and a 501c tax number…..
I really want to see a debate. Time outs are lame and if you can’t multitask, get out the kitchen (sorry just a wee bit of political ranting).
For profit or not, the fact is, their stuff is inexpensive, which therefore allows people to afford these items. And that is a good thing.
PS: do you think we would be recycling (and many other worthwhile things) if it wasn’t a profitable business?

This debate NEEDS to happen…especially since McCain’s presence in DC was completely useless, with the exception of turning most of the GOP into mutes. Also, my 9 year old loves to argue and I’ve been telling him for weeks that he should watch the debate and get some pointers on how to do it productively. Yes, we are saving for law school.
When Goodwill is too expensive for people, you just know we’re screwed!
They may be for profit, but they also employ people who can’t get jobs otherwise. We have the nicest people in our local goodwill and they all had tough lives before being employed there. That’s why I donate stuff to them.
Damn – even Goodwill is hurting and thank goodness it isn’t the Good Will that is Amanda’s husband Matt Damon.

I also love our local Good Will. They frequently have a lot of Target clearance items (know your prices). Two years ago I got a GINORMOUS brand new Christmas tree right before the holidays. I paid $60. I looked it up online and it had previously sold for $350. We LOVE that tree!
Yeah, the for profit kinda bugs me too. But it’s really hard to beat $0.99 kids’ clothes days! I mainly outfited my children for school on those days – including my daughter’s brownie uniform and dance outfits and my son’s jeans!
I am an avid thrift store shopper and Goodwill is always the more expensive of the stores I go to. I was looking at a pair of boots and they were $10. Ten freaking dollars. I’m sorry, but that is ridiculous.
Goodwill has dropped their prices? What is this world coming to?
I just have to comment that Goodwill is a 501(c)3, but the stores operate as 509’s because they are a supporting organization that makes money for the 501(c)3 to operate. That’s how all thrift store and venture capital businesses that make money for nonprofits work. If the way you make money for a nonprofit is not a part of your mission the IRS makes you file differently.

Does Goodwill accept donations of husbands and boyfriends? Because Bossy has so many she could give to the needy and the less fortunate.

I laughed so hard at this– scary as it is. And the debate, oh man, I was really looking forward to it. I love Obama’s snarky style, I heard something on NPR where he said he would be attending the debate as well as working on the budget because as President, he needed to have the ability to “work on more than one thing at a time”. Little stab at McCain there, I love it!
We’re doomed. Wonder if I can apply for a little of that 700 billion the government is talking about kicking down.
And why is it that these same big businesses that are forever screaming about how they don’t want the government to INTERFERE with their business, are now standing there with their hands out saying “HELP US!”?

Bossy – I really enjoy your blog and read it every day faithfully. I’m certain we don’t agree on a lot of issues, but you are a great writer and a very enjoyable read.
I never comment on any blog because I’m not at all competant with writing and putting forth rational and cogent arguments – I’m a mathematician and much more comfortable with equations and the comforbable anonymity of concepts that are only understood by maybe 20 people in the world.

I LOVE GOODWILL. We have a Goodwill Warehouse in our area where the clothes are $2 pound. My 14 year old daughter loves that place. Just this last weekend, we got a huge bag (big trash size) of clothes for $20! We have to do a little digging because the clothes are all piles on big tables, but it is certainly worth it.
The nicest Goodwill I have been to was in Lodi California.
Bossy thinks Teafran (above comment) is insightful. Let’s just say: you have not heard the last about that $120 dinner — and that’s all Bossy is going to say without the presence of a lawyer.
Our closest Salvation Army closed recently. If a Salvation Army can not stay afloat, who can? No body else seems to have half-priced Wednesdays. Our Goodwill’s prices are like WAY too high. $4.60 for ladies pants is outrageous! I will be pleased if they lower their prices, too.
Actually, Goodwill NEEDS to drop their prices. With the advent of free trade and stores like WalMart, there are many items you can buy for less brand new, than what Goodwill wants to charge.
