Designers? Make It Work

Salt Lake City clothing company Shabby Apple is looking for a dress design for Shabby Apple dresses, and they are enlisting professionals and nonprofessionals alike to enter their contest. The winning design will be featured in their Spring 2010 collection!

All you need to do is follow the Shabby Apple design standards:

This contest makes Bossy all kinds of excited since she is something of a dress designer herself! Not that Bossy has ever actually designed a dress, but how hard could it be? Shall we?

The first thing Bossy did was draw the anatomically-correct stick figure model:

Then Bossy thought about all of the design elements she wants her dress to reflect:

Once Bossy had her concepts in place, she set about transferring these design elements into an appropriate silhouette:

Next Bossy set to work redefining structurelessness in a structured
post premodern way:

   THAT’S the kind of coat I’m talking about! I think it would look great on Bossy. Flossy. Whomever. It’s kind of fitted, and the pockets are great. I did a quick search for “wool military coat” and found some great-looking ones, for cheap.

   Someone once gave me a black wool coat that was really an old Chicago Fire Dept coat. Double breasted – epaulets. I called it my Sgt. Pepper coat. Loved it, very warm. Not a long coat.

   Love the stick designs. When I was a little girl we had Millie the Model comics and dress design for comic book figures followed. My best friend grew up to be a theater director and I think those designs got her pointed down the path.

   Who wants to wear a dress with neither legs nor cleavage showing? Don’t we want one or the other if we’re bothering to wear a dress at all? In fact, isn’t that what dresses are for? Or maybe not. I now notice that Shabby Apple is in Salt Lake City.

   I think the no cleavage rule is the deal breaker. If I have to wear a dress, I must have some cleavage to show off. It offsets the hips, you know.

   Flossy, don’t forget to design the dress in order to skim over the magical undergarments that are common in SLC. VPLs at the knee are SO tacky.

    I was somewhat concerned about Bossy’s lack of feet, but all came out well at the end when she had some sensible black pumps to go with her black ….umm…dress that must be so big as to cover her ginormous boobies. Maybe you will win this contest…it is a contest isn’t it?

    Bossy! Genius. Except I think the model is not supposed to have EYES, which will help her not notice that she looks rather shabby. See no evil and all. But you are almost there, really.
