The Daily Poverty Post.

The other day as Bossy’s friend Martha was getting ready to leave after an afternoon of girl movies don’t ask, Bossy’s husband suddenly appeared from nowhere and followed on Martha’s heels to ask if she has ever tried to locate any Unclaimed Property. “You know, unclaimed money in an account,” said Bossy’s husband. “Uncashed dividends or stocks or refunds or payroll balances or unredeemed money orders…”

He then went on to tell Martha about this great website which makes it easy to find out if you have any outstanding payments coming your way. Meanwhile Bossy was standing a few feet away in her kitchen with her hands on her hips going, “Ever hear of a little idea-less nuisance called The Poverty Party? Care to share that website information with this side of the room?”

So, Bossy presents to her council: this website. It’s put together by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) — and it lists news and information and databases by state, including parts of Canada.

   There was a match for me… but it just gave a code, no indication whatsoever of who the other party is. Or what the “Unclaimed Property” might be. I should be receiving that info via mail in 3 weeks. I’ll keep ya posted, Bossy!

   Last year I actually got a refund of an old electric bill overpayment, and an unclaimed paycheck from my college days. from 1980!!! Who knew?

   About ten years ago, I checked the state of CA site, and the state has $87 in my mother’s name from a class action suit from Levi Stauss. The catch is getting the money. It’s there but it’s not.

   I’ve successfully found money from an old phone bill for me. My husband got a few bucks from something. My grandma has money waiting but she can’t prove that it is hers. This site is definitely worth checking once a year. Thanks for the reminder!

    I ran all of my friends and family’s names through it, hoping my deceased brother had something coming to him that my parent’s could claim, but no such luck. We live in British Columbia and my husband’s name came up that he has something, but it doesn’t say what it is and when we emailed about it, they said it was something about a lawsuit with a bank, which doesn’t ring any bells with hubby. We are not sure we want to pursue it. lol

    Well, shoot. Nothing turned up til I entered my name in TX where I used to live. My name and an address I’ve never lived at came up, so OF COURSE I pressed the “view details” button. And then there were no details. The same page appeared, with the same “view details” button. Which of course I pressed several more times, in the same line of thinking as pounding on a malfunctioning coke machine.
    Pesky old Bossy. Wish you’d never shown me any of this, Reeb mutters with dissatisfaction…

    I tell everyone to check this! I checked last year and got $60 for a settlement against a company I used to work for. Who knew??

    Bossy, don’t give up on the poverty party. Poverty is not fun, and it’s boring a lot of the time. That’s why it stinks so much. Banding together makes it just a little more tolerable.

    Reeb, It was a class action suit. Probably something to do with truth in advertising or something similar where you show proof of purchasing stuff when the company ripped off customers( and believe me she bought levis for five kids).

    Thanks, Boss Lady! $207 is heading my way from a forgotten savings account my parents started for me when I was a tyke. Their goal was $1 a day until I needed the money for college. Too bad they didn’t a) save more, and b) tell me that this account existed until now.

    Some unclaimed property recently came my way. Turns out I had money left from rolling over a 401K obtained in my former corporate life (the one where the company MATCHED your contributions) 15 years ago. You cannot imagine the glee I experienced upon reading the notice informing me of this news. Until, of course, I came to the amount: $19. Ai yi yi. Hope the other fortune seekers have more luck.

    Not a penny for I. However I’m from a very small town (the kind with like 10 main families kind of small) and I found a few with the same last name as me. Makes me want to go down there and help some of my “cousins” claim some money…for a small finders fee lol j/k that would involve leaving my beloved blogs.

    Thanks for the link today. Though, I knew I was good, I found money for my decease Bubie that my mother can pursue and money for the Adorable Boyfriend that he can pursue.

    Always good to get back what’s owed to you. Better yet — is to not be on the list because I have all the money that was once owed to me.

    Sadly, the NY website is busted and it’s the only one of all the states I’ve lived in with any chance. But mostly, things like this never happen to me. I am just not a finder of lucky things or a winner of contests (hint, hint, Bossy).

    Hello! I just finished up reading every post in the “Daily Poverty Party” achieves. I’m a single mom of two boys who commutes at least 2 hours each day to and from work. Long story short, I need this blog!!! You’ve broken down what I’ve been reading about doing in ways I can do it too. It’s not about changing all at once, but making small changes and taking one step at a time. I’m thinking now I can get some things under control!

    I can’t wait to back through and read all the comments associated with the posts.

    I know I have money waiting for me from when I lived in Hawaii, and Louisiana sent me a tax refund that I never got, because I moved to California and then changed my name. The web-site is legitimate. But the process to reclaim my money was soooo time consuming and ridiculous, it wouldn’t be worth it by the time I paid the notary fees and what not. If I ever go to Hawaii again, maybe I’ll take care of it.
