You are looking at the cast of High School Musical. Bossy knows this theatrical phenomenon has been around for two ear-splitting years, but she still isn’t sure what in whoey it is.

Is it a play? A TV show? A movie? All three? None? The return of the Third Reich? Care to answer any more questions?

This is why Bossy grabbed her daughter yesterday and asked her to explain High School Musicaland to summarize the plot.

explainer2

"It’s Disney Channel’s Original movie. It’s about this high schooler named Troy who has a dad who wants him to really—first of all he’s a junior – and he has a dad who wants him to have a career in basketball pretty much, and when the family is away, for New Year’s eve, um, they’re at this party and Troy, well, they have this um stage where they pick two people from the audience and pick a song and try to sing it, so Troy gets picked—and there’s another high school student named Gabriella who is also at this party and gets picked… And then so they sing together and after that, they like each other.

But when the party is over, they both have to go home. And it’s also the end of their vacation but they both go to different schools. But Troy’s first day back from winter vacation, Gabriella moves to his school. By accident. And, um, then they meet up and are like “I think I know you from somewhere,” and they figure it out.

Then they hold auditions for the school play, and since they sang together at the party they thought it would be a cool idea so they signed up. And fast forward a little bit, they audition and get into the school play and they’re the main people, and so the people who usually get the big parts named Sharpay and Ryan are now really mad… and so are Troy’s basketball buddies because they don’t like singing… and so is his dad who is the coach.

OK, and then… um, there’s a whole interference … the basketball buddies don’t like Gabriella because they think she interferes with Troy’s basketball skills because he shows up late for practice, and so they try to think of a plan to break them up. And then Sharpay is really mad obviously—Sharpay and Ryan—so they try to change the date of the play to the same exact time and day as the Basketball championships.

And so that works out, they do that.

And then there’s also the other thing that was already in place: Gabriella’s really smart so she’s in like um, an advanced math group or science or whatever—and their last meet, their big last thing—what’s-it-called?—like a competition, is on the same day and time also.

So: the play, the basketball game and the competition are all on the same day at the same time.

So then Troy’s basketball buddies show Gabriella a video of Troy saying he doesn’t actually like Gabriella… and Troy did say it, but they made him say it—it’s actually completely fake. So now Gabriella and Troy are broken up because she saw the video and thought it was real.

Then the basketball buddies think of a new plan because Troy tells them they’re wrong, and they feel like they’re wrong because Troy is completely crushed. And so the day of the basketball game and all that, they think of a plan so they can go to each and every one of the things, all together.

And that plan is to turn the electricity out on the scoreboards so it doesn’t show the score and they can’t play the game then.

So then they have to go to the play… and when they’re at the play, they sing their song called Breaking Free, and every single Wildcat—which is what their team is called—every person at the school is there in the audience while they sing their song, and so when they’re done they rush back to the game—except Gabriella and her friend Taylor go to the math or science competition while Troy and everybody else goes to the basketball game.

So they turn the electricity back on and they win the game…the big championship… and since Troy was the Team Captain they are really proud of him. And then Troy and Gabriella understand that Troy wasn’t actually meaning to say those things and so they get back together, and they sing the last song about everyone working together and “We’re All In This Together” is the song, and the mean girl Sharpay is all, (hands on hips.)”
